Interior Designer's Heaven!

I was just browsing on Yahoo like I like to do because they always have the greatest and most relevant stories to today's society! Well as I scrolled over to look for more stories, I found the picture of the most beautiful room (at left)! As an aspiring Interior Designer myself I absolutely could not pass up an opportunity to explore the wonderful world of textures, patterns, colors, lay-outs,  accessories, all of which the 10 rooms did a great job of displaying. I loved every last room, and for different reasons as well. Design is such a broad concept because each room is designed well, but what makes them great are totally different from one another and generally left to the opinion of the viewer and everyone will have different opinions. This article not only only tells us straight from Interior Designers mouths what makes a good design, or what makes their design a good design, there are quotes from them as well which I love!!!!!!

“The first rule about decorating is that you can break almost all the other rules.”— Billy Bladwin

“Ceilings must always be considered. They are the most neglected space in a room.” — Albert Hadley

“Real comfort, visual and physical is vital in every room.” — Mark Hampton

My Favorite Design!

I loved this design because the colors were soooo beautiful, bold, yet subdued in the best way that worked for the space. The walls are not a harsh, stark white which adds to the warmth of the space. The wall color is more of a warm cream color. They layout, is beyond beautiful! The sofas are a beautiful mocha like color and are of such a sleek design as well. The table in the  middle looks like a deep brown marble! The chairs in front of the fireplace are a beautiful light creamy color and the wood on the legs and back are a nice deep brown. The shape of those two chairs seems to really have a Victorian feel to them and that to me adds a sense of modern style with Victorian twist to it. The floor to ceiling windows are super gorgeous! They let in a lot of natural light and keeps the room really open! The curtains even though are a plain, simple, neutral tan/white, are extremely beautiful in their simplicity, in this case, a little goes a long way, and says a lot! When I design a room, I would love to use this room as inspiration for less is more, and the use of neutrals can be a very good thing!

Poster Idea!

Idea #1

This is my first idea! I was hoping to show the connection between the security of the lock, and their support for Breast Cancer awareness. I tried my best to allow some white space, but  to also use all the pictures it took to convey my idea in a clean and crisp way. I liked the title initially, but after making another draft I realize there are better ideas out there. Well the next draft will have some of the changes I plan to make.

Idea #2

Here's my second design idea, and after looking at both in class, laid out, and along side the professor, she helped me figure out that design idea #1 was a lot better than this one. But, I did like this one because of the dark background, it made the words pop and the items inside stand out more because they are so light in chroma compared to the background.

*Idea #1 will be revamped and edited a little bit to get that perfect look that I'm going for! =]

Color Police!

Today we did color police, and I saw many examples of good and bad color usage.

For bad design:

  •  Crayola Crayons
  •  Market Pantry brand/logo
  • Clean and Clear logo

For good design:

  • Suave Cherry Blossom lotion (the flower portion)
  • Welchs Fruit Snacks
  • Jolly Rancher Fruit Chews

Why the not-goodness? The three I chose as bad design all seemed to have colors that just didn't match, they seemed soooo opposite of each other that there was little visual balance to me. The Market Pantry logo design (as posted) to me seemed to be the ugliest design ever seen on this planet for many reasons. The red is very bright and strong in chroma, yet the green seems to be less strong and a little more subdued in chroma. Also the light brown line in the middle of the design does a great job of breaking those two colors up, but it makes them seem like two different things even though they are supposed to be one unit. The Market Pantry off to the side is a bit distracting to me as well.

Why the goodness? The three I chose as good design all seemed to have very strong chroma, and colors that collectively worked together well. My favorite design was the Welchs Fruit Snacks because all the colors are soooo bright in chroma, they contrast but in a way that works well, and it has very nice hue and the light blue box being the dominant hue works to make the fruit at the bottom and the title stand out.
